Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to question particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
